6 Maintenance Tips Every Boat Owner Should Know

Mar. 9 2022 Miscellaneous By FMM

Owning a boat is a fun, fulfilling experience that opens up a world of incredible recreation possibilities. However, boat ownership comes with a host of important responsibilities, and among them, maintenance is absolutely critical in order to keep your boat running smoothly season after season.

No matter the style or size of your boat, there are some maintenance-related tips you should know. Keep these boat maintenance tips in mind throughout the year, and remember to ‘check in’ with your boat from time to time, ensuring it is in optimal operating condition.

Tip #1: Make it a Point to Flush the Engine After Every Use

Regardless of how long you were on the water or whether you use your boat in fresh or salt water, it’s a good idea to flush your engine with fresh water after every outing.

Routine engine flushes help to prevent the formation of salt crystals and mineral deposits. These formations can damage internal components, especially if an unflushed engine is left to sit for a long time in between each outing.

Virtually all modern outboards have integrated flushing systems that make the process fast and easy.

Tip #2: Keep an Eye on Your Propeller

A boat without a functioning prop is…well…dead in the water.

Before getting out to enjoy some time on the water, check to ensure your prop nut and cotter pin are securely in place. Also, after each trip out, inspect your prop and prop shaft for signs of damage or accumulation of debris like seaweed, fishing line, or netting.

Tip #3: Have Dedicated ‘Dry Storage’ Onboard

Even though storage space can be tight, it’s important to reserve at least one area for ‘dry storage’ for certain gear.

Keep anything that is vulnerable to mold or mildew in dry storage, and be sure to allow towels, life jackets, fishing tackle, and other gear time to fully dry before storing them.

Tip #4: Make Cleaning a Lifestyle Choice

A clean boat is a happy boat, and it’s occupants are even moreso. While it can be tempting to procrastinate on your post-outing cleaning duties, doing so too often can result in the accumulation of dirt, salt, minerals, mold, mildew, and unsightly clutter. A quick exterior wash, clean, and declutter can go a long way toward making your boat last.

Integrate cleaning into your boat ownership lifestyle, and your guests will thank you for it.

Tip #5: Create a Boat Maintenance Checklist

Not every boat needs the same care-and-feeding. However, there are some universal check points you’ll want to consider in making your own boat maintenance checklist.

Be sure to include:

  • Inspection of lights & electronics
  • Security and stability of all railings, swim ladders, etc.
  • Condition of all dock lines and anchor ropes
  • Condition of T-Top (if applicable) and associated hardware
  • Inspection of all exterior surfaces for signs of damage
